"American freelance photographer Chip East, on assignment for Time magazine, said he was arrested Friday on his way to the summit media centre.

East, 29, is officially accredited to cover the conference. He said police stopped him because he wore a white helmet and gas mask. He explained he was carrying $10,000 in photographer's equipment and wore the helmet - emblazoned with the letters TV - to indicate media affiliation.

Arraigned yesterday on charges of taking part in a riot, wearing a gas mask as part of a disguise, assaulting police and resisting arrest, East said he was told he would stay in custody until at least Wednesday."
